Shops
In addition to the stores of retail chains, such
as Watson's drugstore, there are numerous shops and boutiques, offering jewelry,
local and international brand-name merchandise, CDs and so on. The
Bonanza Mall across the street consists mostly of small boutiques with cheap
textiles, which are mainly purchased by teens and students.
Siam Square is a shopping and eating area in Bangkok,
Thailand. It is located in the Khet district,
Pathum Wan. Siam Square is home to several large department stores and shopping
arcades, is fully air conditioned, and is visited by members of the local
middle class and foreigners. The goods are offered at fixed prices, so that a bargain, as is
customary at other locations in Thailand,
is superfluous.
Within the Siam Square there is a wide range of
shops and services, such as restaurants, cafes, designer clothing stores,
bookstores, banks and private schools. Located in the
central area of Siam Square
is the so-called Center Point, an open system, which usually holds events on
the weekends. In particular, young people come to Siam Square to get their money's worth
where all the hip offers are provided.
Nearby and easily accessible shopping venues further
include Siam Center and Siam Discovery Center, Maboonkrong Center (an
air-conditioned pedestrian bridge) and Siam Paragon.
The first buildings were erected for the Siam Square in 1965
on the grounds of the Chulalongkorn
University. The
aim was to give the university another source of income through the rental of
premises. Because
of the proximity to the university, a model business building was opened and was
continually extended.
It subsequently developed into the usual shops
offering a wide range of branded goods of all kinds. This prompted investors to
engage in other activities, such as building hotels, shopping centers and
restaurants. Siam Square is currently the most popular shopping area in Bangkok, especially with
teenagers and tourists.
Location
Siam
Square is located in Pathum Wan district,
and is accessible from the streets of Henri Dunant, Rama I and Phaya Thai. Siam
Discovery and Siam
Center, along with Siam
Paragon, are located on the opposite side of Rama I Road, and are accessible
via the Siam Skytrain station and an open pedestrian bridge.
Located on the opposite
side of the Phaya Thai Road,
the MBK Center can be accessed from the Bonanza
Mall, Siam Square,
and an enclosed and air-conditioned pedestrian bridge. Parking facilities are
located in the garage and cost the usual fare in Bangkok. The parking garages around
the Siam Square,
however, especially on weekends and holidays, are chronically overcrowded and
congested.

Cinemas
Scala, built in 1967, has about 900 seats and is the
oldest cinema in Bangkok
with only a canvas.
Lido, an older multiplex cinema, has three
gambling houses and an area where many foreign and independently produced films
are shown, which one does not normally see in Thailand.
The Siam is a
cinema from the seventies.
