Generally speaking Thailand, and Bangkok in particular, is very gay friendly. They cater well for both gay residents and tourists. As one of the big attractions in Thailand is the buzzing, vibrant city of Bangkok, it comes as no surprise that there is more than your fair share of gay and gay friendly establishments.
The people of Thailand withhold any prejudices that may effect business and have an adverse effect on income, and thus welcome all preferences with open arms. There are many establishments owned by gays, and even those which aren’t welcome them. The male gay scene is visibly prevalent whilst the lesbian scene, despite having a strong existence, tends to be a lot more discreet.
Soi 4 is the centre of the Bangkok gay scene, and it is very much a case of strolling down the street, popping into any of the numerous bars and feeling right at home. The most famous gay bar in Bangkok is probably the Telephone Bar. This bar has been serving food and drink since the 1980′s, and originally got its name as each table had a telephone so you could call anyone on another table that took your fancy.
This has moved with the times however and now there is internet access allowing Skype calls between tables. This is a hugely popular place to have something to eat and a few drinks before hitting the clubs. The three storey building also has a karaoke room on the top floor where many have crooned along to the catalogue of over 600 songs; in both English and Thai.
The Balcony Bar is directly opposite the Telephone Bar and every bit as popular. They have an ‘in seat’ bar service and serve a wide variety of Thai style fast foods. There is also a karaoke room and special events on Bank Holiday. There is a daily happy hour between 5.30pm-8pm. Bearbie is dedicated to our little furry friends, and any fans should head here. This is a fun packed karaoke bar where a good time is had by all.
Tiger Terrace takes its name from the famous beer that it serves in abundance. Run by the same people responsible for the Balcony, this gay beer bar serves cheap drinks all night long and many who intended moving on find themselves here until kicking out time, and crawl out of the doors in the early hours. Bas Boutique Room is essentially a cocktail bar open ’til 3am. The best cocktails in the area flow freely and there is a very relaxed atmosphere.
Sphinx bar/restaurant is open until 2am on weekends has established an excellent reputation for their Thai and international cuisine as well as their extensive drinks menu. You can relax here over a few drinks against a backdrop of jazz and chill out music. The Sugar Bowl is a gay owned bar at the entrance of Soi 4 and has a reputation for its great party nights. If you pop in for a drink and are peckish, their famous BBQ ribs are a must.
