Pattaya and Jomtien

The location of the new Bangkok Suvarnabhumi airport has given a big boost to Pattaya and the surrounding area instead of travelling right across Bangkok and then south from the old airport the new one is on the south eastern side of the city only just over an hour from Pattaya.

Compared with at least 3 to 4 hours to the nearest beach resort on the west coast and it has also helped put the islands such as Ko Samet and Ko Chang on the Tourist map.

Pattaya & Jomtiem

World famous for its night time adult entertainment,Pattaya may seem like an odd choice for to some for a retirement haven but Pattaya is a city that is trying to alter its public image and has a lot to offer in terms of good reasonably priced accommodation, good transport it has all  such as a big water sports industry, large purpose built attractions and a multitude of  ‘things to do’ , all kinds of clubs and associations and endless entertainment opportunities.

Every kind of sports activity is available such as Golf, Tennis, Fishing and so on.  Pattaya is also a gateway to the surrounding area including Thailand’s ‘other’ Desert Island getaways located just off the coast and every bit as enticing as the famous southern islands but only 2 hours from Bangkok and just over an hour to the airport.

Pattaya has a very large expat community from all over Europe, North America and Australia so there is a huge amount of infrastructure geared to the needs of western retiree’s Pattaya is a city but not huge so it has everything you need but is not a sprawling urban area, so getting around is very easy, you could live in the city right in the entertainment area or out in the developments in the countryside as no where is that far from town.

Jomtien

This is the adjacent town to Pattaya the two are linked so one blendsinto the other but Jomtien is much quieter with little nightlife of the Pattaya variety and a much better beach this is a good location for retirement as it is very close to Pattaya and the attractions, eating and so on yet has a very different atmosphere.

Personal Safety

The chances of violent crime against a western older person are very low indeed, this is because of Thai’s respect for ‘the family’ in particular older people, family life even in a city is the center of  Thai life and culture. You should of course not be foolhardy and walk down some unlit alleyway at night, just take normal precautions.
